Myrtle Beach Bike Week

This past week has been the Myrtle Beach Bike Week, if any of you have been following the news, this year has been somewhat of a wash compared to other years. The city passed numerous ordinances that have limited the amount of bikers, passed certain laws that are only in effect in the city of Myrle Beach, and have made the week less appealing to many bikers. Of course, one of these laws being a helmet law. If you do not already know, helmets are not required for riding a bike in the state of SC, and a lot of bikers are upset by this. Of course, I think that this should be a State law to begin with, just as wearing a seat belt is, but this is not the place to have that debate. The good news is, that this year, there have been far fewer accidents (20s vs 90s last year) and far fewer injuries as a result. The bad news is, that many bikers did not come out this year, and the result has been far less business and cash flow for the area. This is normally the beginning of the season for the Grand Strand, however, this year, businesses have suffered. On a interesting note, I have seen many different biker clubs, including the Hells Angels, and apparently Robbie Knievel was in town this weekend signing autographs and such.

By the way, this picture was taken last weekend at the beginning of biker week at a bar/club that only opens during bike week and for various large occasions of the such. There are more bikes around now, but I'm told that the number is still far fewer than it was last year.
